The Yankee Corporation, a premier North American manufacturer of reamers, has seen a big improvement in productivity thanks to a Thompson friction welding machine.

Yankee has invested in a refurbished model for producing its extensive range of tools, which are typically used for aerospace and automotive applications.

The Thompson direct drive machine is equipped with a number of features including a rotating flash removal tool and intuitive software system for full control over the weld cycle.

Yankee, based in Fairfax, Vermont, opted for the reconditioned model because it needed a speedy replacement for its ageing welding equipment.

“Our productivity has improved at least 25 per cent at a time when our business is very buoyant and we’re making plans to expand our distributor network,” said plant manager Tony Olson.

“All our operators are impressed with the machine, particularly the computer interface which is very easy to use. In more than 20 years in the manufacturing industry, I’ve never met a more professional and helpful company than Thompson,” he added.

Thompson has also recently supplied a refurbished friction welding machine to hydraulic cylinder maker Sahgev whose customers include John Deere. It is using the machine at its factory in Gevigney, France, to join a range of chromed bar piston rods.

The Halesowen-based company produces rotary and linear friction welding equipment for component makers in the aerospace, automotive, construction machine and mineral exploration industries.
